Over 50 lbs. of meth & cocaine found in fuel tank
Border Patrol agents busted a woman and man at the Highway 86 checkpoint Thursday morning after discovering over 50 lbs. of narcotics in their vehicle’s fuel tank.
The suspected drug smugglers, both U.S. citizens, were stopped around 7 a.m. Agents said the 33-year-old woman was driving a Mercedes Benz with the 24-year-old male passenger.
A Border Patrol canine alerted them to the car for a secondary inspection. Agents discovered 45 vacuum sealed bundles of methamphetamine and one bundle of cocaine hidden inside the car’s fuel tank.
Authorities said the meth weighed 52.2 lbs. and had an estimated street value of $522,000. The cocaine weighed 11.2 ounces and is worth an estimated $14,560 on the street.
The man and woman were turned over to the DEA for further investigation.
In fiscal year 2014, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents seized more than 445 lbs. of methamphetamine and 148 lbs. of cocaine, agent said in the release.
