Students return to class after gas leak evacuation at Bobby Duke Middle School

Cal Fire were on scene at Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella responding to a call of a gas leak that was reported shortly before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Approximately 700 students and faculty were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Students were seen outside the school under shade structures, and Cal Fire remained at the scene for an hour.

A father of a student told KESQ News Channel 3 that the gas leak was caused by a construction worker, who accidentally hit a gas pipe. School officials decided to evacuate the students out of precaution.

Southern California Gas Company said they identified the minor gas on the school-side facility. Coachella Valley Unified School District says the leak was isolated and restored gas service back to the school, excluding the area where the minor was identified.

The school district is working to repair the issue.

Campus security confirmed no threat to students on campus.

School operations went back to normal, students who were not picked up early returned back to class.
