Census job fair held to fill countywide positions

The first of several recruitment drives to hire hundreds of workers in the Inland Empire to fill a range of temporary positions with the U.S. Census Bureau in anticipation of the 2020 census will be held today in Riverside.

“We want everyone in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and surrounding areas to know that the U.S. Census Bureau is hiring,” said Mayra Marrufo of Eastvale, a federal recruiting manager. “Currently, we are hiring for a variety of jobs.”

The recruitment drive is slated for 10 a.m. to noon at the Riverside County Workforce Development Center, 1325 Spruce St.

Residents interested in applying for a position can sit down with recruitment specialists and fill out online applications at the center, as well as speak with career coaches regarding what they’re interested in doing and how to polish their submissions.

Other options include completing applications independently at www.census.gov/fieldjobs for manager jobs, and www.2020census.gov/jobs for office support and field positions, according to officials.

Applicants can also call (855) 562-2020, or the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339, for further assistance.

Census officials said office managers, field supervisors, census takers and clerks are needed in advance of the 2020 count, which is constitutionally mandated every 10 years. Hourly pay ranges from $12 to $23 an hour, according to USAJobs.gov.

The government is seeking both temporary full- and part-time employees. Even individuals with non-violent criminal convictions will be considered for employment.

“There are no general prohibitions on hiring,” according to a statement on the 2020census.gov website. “The bureau considers a number of relevant factors, such as the duties associated with any positions applied for.”

All prospective employees will be subject to a background check, officials said.

New hires will be eligible for health insurance benefits, and the duration of employment will be discussed when and if a tentative job offer is made, according to the bureau.
