Mountain residents host ‘thank you’ event for Cranston Fire first responders
Over 100 people gathered at the Parkman Hunting Lodge in Mountain Center Saturday to say thank you to all the firefighters, law enforcement and volunteers who put their lives on the line to save their homes from burning down in the Cranston Fire.
Organizers say the turnout far exceeded their expectations. “It’s been amazing I’m so glad so many people in the community came together to celebrate,” said Christel Reyna, the event designer.
“It just makes us feel good. it makes our deputies and our personnel that are up here on a day to day basis working with our cal fire partners and department of forestry it just makes us feel proud,” said Captain Leonard Purvis, of the Hemet Sheriff’s Station.
Locals took turns sharing their own experiences from the Cranston Fire and their unique messages of gratitude.
Organizers also extended their thanks to those who worked tirelessly to rescue animals during the fire – Janice Murasko and her husband cared for animals that were left behind when people had to evacuate. “We were able to get to the homes and check on the animals and feed them and make sure they had food and water and that they were safe…we felt like what we did was kind of small…but for the animals it was pretty big,” said Murasko, the Director of Operations for Animal Rescue Friends of Idyllwild.
First responders at the event said they have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community — who they feel honored to serve.
“When a big emergency like this happens, it’s nice to have the gratitude of the citizens, but yet I know all my brothers and sisters that wear this uniform, we just do it because it’s the job and it’s what we’re expected to do,” said Chief Bill Weiser, a Cal Fire division chief.
