4th annual Latino Film and Arts festival kicks off in Coachella
The fourth annual Latino Film and Arts Festival begins in Coachella today, with four days of screenings of works from emerging Latino filmmakers.
The festival, which originally began in New York City as a response to a lack of Latino representation in mainstream film and television, will present its inaugural west coast version of the festival starting this evening with a red carpet event at the Coachella Library, where the entirety of the festival will be held through Sunday.
This year’s theme is “The Awakening of the Sleeping Giant,” pointing to the lack of attention or recognition for Latino filmmakers trying to get their big break in the United States.
Filmmakers who submitted their works for the festival are eligible to win a $2,000 grand prize, along with $1,000 awards for “Best International Film” and the “American Diversity Award.”
The festival will feature some free screenings, along with $12 tickets for other screenings, and $35 VIP passes granting access to the entire festival, including the awards ceremony and parties.
