Fundraising push being made for annual Desert AIDS Walk

The Desert AIDS Project is making a push to grow its annual Desert AIDS Walk by looking to set a bigger goal in fundraising.

Expect packed crowds and running gear at the walk, drawing thousands of people committed to fighting the disease. Some doing it like one survivor for the past 31 years.

“I feel lucky I’m able to participate on a yearly basis,” the survivor said.

Staff at D.A.P. say commitments like that are what makes the walk special.

“They clearly not only believe in the mission and rise once a year to help out to raise the awareness and the money, but they look forward to being there and having a good time,” Darrell Tucci, chief development officer of D.A.P., said.

A good time that draws about 2,000 people every year. The non-profit is rolling out a bigger goal for the walk to raise $350,000, after raising $325,000 last year. A new slogan of “Community, Action, Impact” is looking to mobilize support.

“We work everyday in this community to do testing and public education, fight stigma and end this epidemic in our lifetimes,” Tucci said.

A fight that continues as Tucci said D.A.P. treats nearly 5,000 patients every day.

“You know eventually everybody on the planet has probably known someone who’s affected by this disease,” the survivor said.

An observation that organizers hope will become less of a reality by eliminating the disease.

The walk is scheduled for next Saturday October 20th.
