Local students take part in Great Shakeout at Sunnylands

People all over the valley took part in the nation’s largest earthquake drill as the Great California Shakeout took place. That included local students who practiced getting prepared at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage.

Radios blare after as people duck and take cover at Sunnylands, as news of an earthquake travels.

While the chatter may seem serious it’s only a drill as students and staff took part in the Great Shakeout, like sixth grader Vincent Martinez of John Glenn Middle School.

“I will have more experience if there ever is a major thing that happens, you know?” he said.

He was one of a few students who explained the science behind earthquake showing how it can affect land along fault lines…

“They’re supposed to be going past each other sliding by…” he said as he pointed to a diagram of a transverse fault.

Students from Palm Desert High School’s health academy provided lessons in first aid. Some acted as earthquake victims to show younger students what to do in an emergency.

For one health academy student being able to demonstrate life-saving skills is an invaluable service she can provide.

“There are lots of little kids here and lots of people who don’t know what to do, so I think it’s rewarding to be able to educate some people,” Adriana Canizales-Cruz, a PDHS junior, said.

The same education she has taken to heart in case the big one ever hits.

“I know where I will meet up with my mom and my sister in case something god-willing does not happen,” she said.

This is the tenth year the shakeout has been done in the state. About 460,000 people participated in Riverside County.
