Rainbow crossing dedicated in late mayor Greg Pettis’ honor

Cathedral City leaders and members of the Cathedral City Gay Business Association held a dedication ceremony of a rainbow crossing in honor of late mayor Gregory Pettis .

The rainbow crossing is located next to the city’s bell tower near Civic Center.

Pettis was the longest serving member of the city council and the first openly gay candidate to run for political office in the Coachella Valley.

Cathedral City’s current mayor Mark Carnevale said it means a lot to memorialize Pettis in this way.

” I can’t put into words. It’s something like this is still not good enough for the works this man did for Cathedral City and the United States. He’s done so much for California, so much for Cathedral City and I can’t put into words. It’s the least we can do for him, ” Carnevale said.

During his nearly 25 years in public office, Pettis helped pass legislation that enhanced civil rights and protections for the LGBTQ community.
