Local farmworker group rallies to defend Cesar Chavez’s legacy

COACHELLA, Calif. (KESQ) - California marked its first Farmworkers Day, a change that is already stirring strong reactions across local communities.

The new designation replaces the long-observed Cesar Chavez Day and comes amid recent sexual abuse allegations involving the late labor leader. While the claims have not been proven, they have prompted renewed scrutiny of Chavez’s legacy and actions.

In Coachella, a group of farmworkers gathered at the Cesar Chavez Memorial along Avenue 50 to honor the man they credit with transforming labor conditions in the fields.

The gathering was emotional, with supporters emphasizing Chavez’s lifelong advocacy for farmworkers’ rights despite the controversy.

“Just because someone says something, you need time to investigate,” said organizer Clementina Olloque. “He doesn’t have a chance to defend himself. It’s unfair after everything he did for us.”

Olloque, who says she worked alongside Chavez, expressed frustration with the state’s decision to move away from recognizing him by name. She argued that the change overlooks the voices of farmworkers who directly benefited from his organizing efforts.

“What burns me is that the governor just decided to wipe his name out of the calendar,” she said. “Why not ask the farmworkers or the public first?”

Still, not everyone agrees on how he should be remembered.

Some residents say the shift to Farmworkers Day is appropriate, arguing the focus should be on the broader movement rather than a single figure. Others expressed disappointment, describing Chavez as a personal role model whose teachings shaped generations.

“I think they should rename it for the farmworkers’ fight,” one resident said. “They deserve the recognition instead of one person.”

For Olloque and other supporters, preserving Chavez’s legacy remains a priority.
