Vegetation fire contained in Thermal after forcing evacuations

Cal Fire crews were cleaning up after a vegetation fire broke out in Thermal late Wednesday night near the intersection of Avenue 70 and Pierce Street.

The fire was reported at 11:49 p.m.

It was contained to 3 acres at 2:53 a.m. Hundreds of residents were already evacuated, according to Cal-Fire Riverside officials at the scene.

Firefighters said two mobile homes were destroyed, with two additional structures suffering severe damage, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Avenue 70, between Filmore and Pierce Street, was closed to traffic.

An evacuation center was established at Desert Mirage High School.

60 firefighters were working to mop up the scene and were expected to be there through the next several hours.
