Street-sweeper catches fire, explodes in Thousand Palms

A street-sweeper parked on a Thousand Palms street caught fire Thursday afternoon and CAL FIRE crews were able to contain the blaze within an hour.

As the vehicle burned, a fuel tank appeared to ignite and explode, according to an eyewitness.

"We felt the heat, but we also felt the pressure of the explosion..." said Rick Landeros, who works at Valley Glass, a nearby business."Like a big giant gunshot or something similar."

The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. on the 72000 block of Northshore Street. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire briefly forced the evacuation of a nearby business.
