Youth hailed as hero in icy pond rescue dies in shooting

DREXEL HILL, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a Philadelphia-area teenager hailed as a hero for helping to rescue three children from an icy pond last year has died in an apparent accidental shooting over the weekend. Police in Upper Darby said 17-year-old Anthony Alexander of Collingdale was shot at about 5 p.m. Sunday in a Drexel Hill apartment. A 16-year-old youth faces third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and other charges; his attorney has declined comment. On Feb. 21, 2022, then-16-year-old Alexander helped rescue a boy and two girls who had fallen through ice. He was to be honored next month with a “young hero” award by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
