Desert Hot Springs purchases former city library from Riverside County
The city of Desert Hot Springs has purchased the former library from the Riverside County Library System.
The Riverside County Board of Supervisors approved the sale of the former library building to the city of Desert Hot Springs for $350,000.
The former library operated from 1972 to 2021 before being replaced by a new $12 million library on Palm Drive and Park Lane.
City Mayor Scott Matas and Councilmembers floated the idea of the purchase to County Supervisor Manuel Perez in hopes of using the vacant space as a new center for the community.
In a press release after the purchase Supervisor Perez stated, "This will allow the city to take over the building. It will be theirs to use as they identify new ways to expand their services to residents. We are very proud of our great partnership with the City of Desert Hot Springs that has created the opportunity to grow our services for our residents.”
By acquiring the former library, the city will have full ownership of the entire complex as it is adjacent to the city-owned Carl May Community and Senior Center.
