Palm Springs residents concerned over congested neighborhood, cars speeding through
Residents in one Palm Springs neighborhood are voicing their concerns after they say drivers zoom through, without even heeding stop signs. The area of concerns is Mesquite Ave. near Nueva Vista Dr. just across the street from Demuth Park.
"These people are blowing through these stop signs like there’s no tomorrow," resident Paul Polubinskas said.
Polubisnkas has lived at his home for several years.
"I cannot back out of my driveway safely, " Polubinskas said.
The street curves, causing drivers and residents to get blindsided.
"The cars can’t see you coming, you don’t see who is coming around that curve but they are always coming very fast," resident Jo Herlihy said.
Residents say part of the problem is because drivers often use Mesquite Avenue as an alternate route instead of Ramon Road. Ramon Road is one of the closest main streets that runs parallel to Mesquite, which is also heavily traveled.
Herlihy says vehicles zoom through, without heeding the newly-installed stop signs.
"They barely touch their brakes, or they blow through them at night all the time," Herlihy said.
"We recently just had an accident last Wednesday. Someone took out the whole big sign that says, 'Turn right into Demuth Park.' I jumped out of my bed, it was midnight," Herlihy said.
Residents' images also show street signs and trees that have been torn down from vehicles crashing into them.
Just last year, the city installed stop signs to help mitigate the problem. It also reduced the speed limit from 35 mph to 25 mph.
Residents say both solutions aren't quite working. They want speed bumps installed, so people might actually slow down.
KESQ reached out to the City of Palm Springs. Officials say they first decided to put the signs in because they found them to be more effective. If residents want speed bumps, they'll need to request that next.
