Workers at a gold mine in Turkey are believed to be trapped underground

ISTANBUL (AP) — Several workers are believed to be trapped underground after a landslide hit a gold mine in eastern Turkey. Officials said the landslide at the Copler mine happened at 2:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT) near the town of Ilic in Turkey’s mountainous Erzincan province. The province’s governor says the number of people buried underground is unclear but a search and rescue operation is underway. Anagold Mining has operated the Copler mine since 2009. In a statement, the company said its “most important priority in this difficult process … is the health and safety of our employees and contractors.”
