‘The Room Next Door’ tops Venice Film Festival. Nicole Kidman misses acting honor due to mom’s death

VENICE, Italy (AP) — Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” won the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion award Saturday. The film, which is Almodóvar’s English-language debut and stars Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, took home the top honor. Nicole Kidman won the best actress award for her portrayal of a CEO in an affair with a young intern in “Babygirl.,” Shewas not in attendance. Her director, Halina Reijn read a statement from the actor, revealing that Kidman’s mother died while she was in Venice. The actor says in a statement that she’s in shock and credited her mother for shaping her.
