UPDATE: Authorities identify suspect killed in Banning Officer Involved Shooting

The suspect in a fatal officer involved shooting in Banning has been identified by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's confirmed to KESQ 39-year-old Fernando Guerrero Esparza of Banning died Thursday.

Esparza was shot and killed by an officer after police received calls for a suspect armed with a knife in the 300 block of South San Gorgonio Avenue.

Officers responded to the area and the initial officer on scene contacted a subject matching the description and police say the subject was still armed with a knife and charged at the officer, resulting in an officer involved shooting.

"Life-saving measures were performed on the subject, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene," says Banning Police in a release to KESQ. "The officer involved in this incident was not injured during the contact."

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigations Detail is investigating the shooting along with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
