Bernie Sanders leads votes in Riverside County and across California
The morning after Super Tuesday shows Senator Bernie Sanders leading the votes across Riverside County and California as a whole. Former Vice-President Joe Biden, however, is leading in the majority of states that participated in Super Tuesday.
In Riverside County, as of 4:59 a.m. Wednesday, there were 39,672 votes counted for Sanders and 33,345 votes for Biden. You can check the latest numbers here.
Local Sanders supporters have been working tirelessly for months to garner support for the Vermont Senator. On Super Tuesday, they phone banked and canvassed for hours.
At the end of the night, seeing the numbers coming in locally and statewide, they say they feel their hard work paid off: “It was a lot more than just [Tuesday]. We’ve been here since December. We had the rally in the middle of December. Our volunteers have been putting in work for months now talking to thousands of voters and we’re glad to see some good results in our state,” said Oscar Ortiz, field organizer for the Sanders Campaign in the Coachella Valley.
Volunteers also shared with News Channel 3 they feel Sanders has resonated with a wide base of supporters here in the valley including a lot of young people, minority and working class voters.
Sanders went into super Tuesday as a frontrunner -- and although Biden took the majority of states that participated Tuesday, Sanders racked up big numbers not only here in California, but also in Colorado, Utah and Vermont.
The Registrar of Voters is still counting votes. You can follow the latest numbers here.
