USPS Portola Station set to move

More than 75 community members came out to voice concerns and suggestions about the relocation of the Palm Desert Portola Station USPS post office Wednesday morning.

The lease for the building at Portola near El Paseo expires in August of 2020. The property owner, Portola Plaza Center, LLC doesn’t want to renew, meaning the postal service has to start looking for a new building somewhere in the city.

USPS currently pays around 40,000 dollars per year for the current 13,300 sq. ft. space. A post service representative told residents the budget for the entire move is nearly one million dollars and won’t impact tax payers. The goal is to downsize to a space of approximately 5,000 sq. ft.

Those who have P.O. boxes were told they will not have to change addresses, numbers or zip codes.

The post office would like to hear your suggestions for new locations. You can contact Real-Estate Specialist-Leasing Team representative with USPS Dean Cameron, at 1300 Evans Ave., Suite 200, San Francisco, CA 94188-8200.
