Safety improvements will shut down portion of Date Palm Drive

A stretch of Date Palm Drive will be closed for nearly two weeks in August as crews completely reconstruct and improve the road, but officials said the closure shouldn’t affect traffic.

The closure will be between the I-10 interchange and Varner Road from August 3-14, according to Cathedral City officials. When it’s completed, Date Palm Drive north of I-10 and south of Varner Road will feature brand new pavement and a striped bike lane in each direction.

A 12-foot median will also be added to improve safety between the different directions of traffic, according to the city’s release.

The reconstruction and improvement project will not interfere with traffic at the I-10 interchange at Date Palm Drive and it will not interfere with traffic on Varner Road, officials said in the release.

Alternative routes to and from I-10 and Varner Road include Bob Hope Drive and/or Palm Drive.
