Possible gunman report prompts campus search at Chapman University in Orange

A report of a possible gunman on the campus of Chapman University in Orange County prompted officials to ask students to shelter in place while police investigate.

The university said no threat was found following an hour-long search Tuesday evening.

The university sent out a campus-wide alert around 7 p.m. after someone spotted a man possibly armed with a handgun in DeMille Hall, where students were taking final exams.

Students in the immediate area around the building were told to evacuate, while those inside were told to shelter in place.

The campus resumed normal operations around 8:15 p.m. after no threat was found.

The university said in the alert it took the report seriously in light of recent terrorist attacks in California and elsewhere.
