Fundraiser underway for fallen Indio police officer

A fundraiser is currently underway at Ciro’s Restaurante on 81963 HWY 111 in Indio for an Indio police officer who passed away from battle with cancer in May.

The fundraiser will last until 8 p.m tonight.

Isabel “Izzy” Velasquez, 26, died on May 31 following a “brief but brave battle” with a rare form of lung cancer. She was laid to rest last Monday at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City.

According to Velasquez’s obituary, she was born in South El Monte, with the family later moving to Indio, where she attended Indio Middle and High School, participating in the cadet corps, softball, and music. She later attended College of the Desert and joined the U.S. Army Reserve at 19, where she worked as a logistics specialist for six years.

Velasquez “fulfilled her dream” of being a police officer when she was hired by the Indio Police Department on July 7, 2016.

Velasquez is survived by “her parents, Alejandro Velasquez Sr., and Mercedes Garibay, her siblings, Alejandro Velasquez, Jr., and Esther Velasquez, nieces and nephews, her beloved Leah, her longest love Flex and her extended family in California, Peru, and Mexico.”

Her family used some of the excess GoFundMe donations to have Velasquez memorialized with a billboard that was put up two weeks ago on eastbound Interstate 10, near Jefferson Street.
