Three things to check on your car before heading out on wet roads

If you're planning on hitting the roads for this week's holiday travel, be sure you check these three things on your car first: your tires, windshield wipers and fluid levels.

Sergio Ceballos, Co-owner of Sergio's Automotive tells us why not changing your tires can be dangerous on wet roads.

“It’ll be more slippery being able to maneuver in the wet conditions," Sergio said. "There’s no way for the water to go through it so it’s very slippery,” he added.

When it comes to checking windshield wipers,“You want to look at the blade and see if it’s missing," he said. "You want to make sure it’s in tact as well as the framing of the actual wiper blade. Usually what happens as it’s wiping back and forth on the freeway is it’ll start falling apart,” he said.

And for those taking a trip to snowy areas like Idyllwild or Big Bear, it’s a good idea to check your coolant to antifreeze ratio.

“Having the proper ratio, you won’t freeze over," he said. "If you have too much water in the system what can happen is it can freeze up in the system and you won’t be able to start the vehicle. Sometimes it can actually damage components of the vehicle,” he added.

For those traveling to the snow be sure you practice putting on your chains before you head out. That might save you a headache.

And typically buying chains on the desert floor is cheaper than buying them up in the mountains.

Please drive with caution.
