Driver killed in collision with big rig on I-10 in Cabazon identified

KESQ

Authorities today identified a 22-year-old man who was killed in a collision between a sedan and tractor-trailer on Interstate 10 in Cabazon.

The fatality occurred about 12:54 p.m. on westbound I-10, just east of Morongo Trail, according to Cal Fire.

According to the CHP, the driver of the sedan was speeding just before it and the big rig impacted, but no other details were immediately available.

CHP officers and Riverside County Fire Department personnel reached the location minutes later and found the occupant of the car deceased. The trucker apparently was not hurt.

The Riverside County coroner's office identified the driver on Wednesday as Anthony Hernandez of Palm Springs.

Officers shut down three of four lanes, leaving only the fast lane available for westbound transit, because of the crash, according to reports from the scene.

The big rig was still drivable and was removed from the location.

The lane closures were lifted by 4 p.m.  An investigation was underway.
