Ex-NFL player suspected of murdering mother arrested in San Diego

Former NFL player Sergio Stephen Brown, who is suspected of murdering his mother last month in their Midwestern hometown, was behind bars in San Diego today following his arrest at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Brown, 35, was taken into custody Tuesday while re-entering the United States from Mexico, according to police in Maywood, Illinois, where his mother was found dead last month.
Brown was being held in San Diego Central Jail without bail pending extradition to the town just west of Chicago where he lived with 73-year-old Myrtle Brown, whose body was found Sept. 16 near a creek a short distance from their home.
Family members had reported Brown and his mother missing earlier that day, said Carmen Rivera, spokeswoman for the Maywood Police Department.
Mexican law enforcement officials had known the suspect's whereabouts since at least Sept. 19, CNN reported, citing an anonymous source. They deported him after authorities in Illinois obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to the news station.
Brown played defensive back for Notre Dame before signing with the New England Patriots in 2010. He spent seven seasons in the NFL, playing with the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills.
Maywood police said last month they knew of at least one social media video that appeared to show the ex-footballer in a tropical locale, making comments about "fake news" and claiming that he believed that his mother was on vacation, CNN reported.
