Palm Springs Art Museum to begin Black History Month Thursday sessions
The Palm Springs Art Museum will begin a month of free weekly night sessions Thursday to celebrate Black History Month.
The first event, "Sugar Shack: A Jazz-Inspired Night Sessions,'' will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the main museum at 101 North Museum Way. It will feature music from Hope Diamond and her band.
"Prepare to be mesmerized by captivating narratives and rhythmic harmonies that will transport you to the era of the Harlem Renaissance,'' museum officials said.
The events will continue at the same time each Thursday with a Rhythm and Hues Fashion Showcase set to continue the series on Feb. 15, a second Sugar Shack event with a blues- and soul-inspired night sessions set to follow Feb. 22, and a Block Party celebrating 50 years of hip-hop set to conclude the events on Feb. 29.
The museum partnered with the Palm Springs Black History Month Committee to present the month-long celebration, which is part of a larger series of events scheduled throughout February. Events started Feb. 1 with an event celebrating the Harlem Renaissance and African American culture and arts and continued Saturday with the 37th annual Black History Month Awards Gala.
Other festivities scheduled throughout the month are a men's basketball tournament on Feb. 17, a Palm Springs Black History Caravan on Feb. 19, and the 37th annual Palm Springs Black History Month Parade and Town Fair on Feb. 24.
