23-year-old bystander killed after pursuit ends in crash in Cabazon
CABAZON, California (KESQ) - Update: A high-speed chase on Thursday night through the streets of Riverside County ended in tragedy.
It all began around 9:30 p.m. when a Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to pull over a red Ford Mustang convertible at the roundabout on Morongo Trail and Seminole Drive.
Police say the driver, a 48-year-old man from Hemet, refused to stop, igniting a pursuit that would soon reach speeds of 90 to 95 mph.
As the Mustang traveled westbound on Seminole Drive, a red Nissan Versa, driven by a 23-year-old woman from Banning, was waiting at a stop sign at the intersection of Seminole Drive and Malki Road.
The Mustang failed to slow down, crashing into the rear of the Nissan.
Both vehicles were propelled into a nearby business.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, transporting the Mustang’s driver to Desert Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The young woman in the Nissan did not survive the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as Carlie Membrin of Banning.
