LA QUINTA, Calif. (KESQ) -- Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 player in the world for a reason.

Making his 2026 season debut on the PGA TOUR and sixth start at the American Express after missing last year's tournament, Scheffler shot 9-under 63 at La Quinta Country Club on Thursday.

Scheffler, the clear-cut favorite to win his first American Express title this week, is one shot off the leaders at 10-under par.

The reigning four-time PGA TOUR Player of the Year is seeking his 20th career victory this week.

The 29-year-old Scheffler will play the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA WEST on Friday for the second round.
