CalFresh changes take effect, raising concerns across the Coachella Valley

Coachella Valley, Calif. (KESQ) - New changes to CalFresh benefits are now in effect across California, creating uncertainty for thousands of families who rely on the program for food assistance.

State officials say the updates stem from new federal legislation that modifies eligibility requirements and how benefits are calculated. As a result, some households may see reduced monthly benefits, while others could lose eligibility altogether.

The changes are already raising concerns locally, where many families depend on CalFresh to help make ends meet.

According to the California Department of Social Services, the updated rules particularly impact certain groups, including some lawfully present immigrants, as well as households that do not meet new utility cost requirements tied to benefits.

Local food banks say they are preparing for the impact.

Lorena Marroquin, Vice President of Community Impact for FIND Food Bank, says the organization anticipated the changes and has already begun seeing an increase in demand.

She explained that CalFresh is a vital resource in the community, with many families depending on the assistance to put food on the table. In response, the food bank has been preparing for a rise in distribution needs and is working to continue supporting residents during the transition.

Food bank officials say they are already seeing longer lines at distribution sites and expect demand to continue increasing in the coming weeks.

Despite the changes, officials urge residents not to panic or assume they are no longer eligible. Instead, they recommend contacting a case worker or local agency to verify benefit status and understand how the new rules may apply.

As the rollout continues, food banks and community organizations across the Coachella Valley say they remain committed to providing a safety net for those in need.
