DHS Police, legal experts warn on distracted driving

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) - Desert Hot Springs police and the Walter Clark Legal Group are speaking out about the dangers of distracted driving. Officials say even a few seconds of inattention can lead to serious or deadly crashes, urging drivers to stay focused, avoid phone use, and keep their eyes on the road.

Both law enforcement and legal experts emphasize that prevention starts with personal responsibility behind the wheel.

“People don't take it seriously until they get a ticket, or they get into a traffic collision, which ultimately affects their outlook on texting and driving,” Corona said.

The consequences can be severe. “They realize the severity… they just wrecked their car or hurt themselves or somebody else,” he added.

Tickets for distracted driving start at about $160, but the financial impact can escalate quickly. Legal expert Walter Clark of the Walter Clark Legal Group said, “You can’t be on top of the important job of driving a 5,000-pound vehicle safely if you’re doing all those things.”

Clark also warned about medical costs: “Just for an emergency room now, it’s like $50,000.”

Both police and legal experts stress personal responsibility behind the wheel. Officials say the only exception to using your phone while driving is an emergency, like calling 911. Otherwise, they urge drivers to stay off their phones.
