North Carolina House completes 1st half of veto override on gender-affirming care ban for minors

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A GOP supermajority in the North Carolina House has voted to override the Democratic governor’s veto of legislation banning gender-affirming treatments for transgender youth. It also voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of a bill banning transgender girls from girls’ sports teams participation from middle school through college. Wednesday afternoon’s votes leave the state a pair of Senate votes away from completing the overrides of those vetoes. North Carolina House lawmakers voted along party lines to oppose Cooper’s rejection of a bill that would bar medical professionals from providing hormone therapy, puberty-blocking drugs and surgical gender-transition procedures to almost anyone under age 18. The Senate has a similarly veto-proof GOP majority and planned votes next.
