Cathedral City High named a 2024 California Distinguished School

California Department of Education

Out of the 2,500+ public middle schools and high schools in California, the California Department of Education (CDE) has named Cathedral City High School as a 2024 California Distinguished School

The California Distinguished Schools Program, established in 1985, recognizes California schools whose educators and staff work above and beyond to close the achievement gap and demonstrate exceptional student performance. 293 California middle schools and high schools have been recognized this year.

Schools are selected based on state indicators that go beyond standardized test scores to analyze how public schools are working to meet the needs of all students. These indicators, specified on the California School Dashboard, include increases in graduation rates, reductions in suspension rates, growth in performance in English Language Arts and math, the promotion of positive school climates, etc. Schools recognized for closing the achievement gap enrolled at least 40 percent of their students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and achieved accelerated academic growth for one or more historically underserved student groups.

“It is my pleasure to honor and recognize these 293 secondary schools for their efforts to provide exemplary public education to all students. Excellent middle schools and high schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people,” remarked Tony Thurmond, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “This year’s California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our secondary educators and school staff who help young adults discover passions and access college and career-ready experiences that will propel them through life.”

The awarded schools will be recognized at the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony on May 3, 2024 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
