Singing telegrams making their return, how a local artist brings a fresh twist to an old tradition
Erik Romney is a local thespian who has started his own business.
“Sometimes work is slim to none, and a lot of my creative juices are flowing,” said Romney. “I just need an outlet, and I just thought, well, why not create a business and make a singing telegram business out of it?”
He's reviving a nostalgic gift of the past: the Singing Telegram.
And the Little Singing Telegram company has a special twist on the traditional approach.
“Singing telegrams are usually songs that everybody knows; what's unique about Little Singing Telegram Company is that I create 100% original songs every time,” said Romney.
Though the business is still new, he's excited to bring performances right to people's doorsteps. He believes the Coachella Valley is an excellent place to start the business.
“[Singing telegrams] have been lost and forgotten here in our community,” he says. “I’m here in the desert, and I think I just had a calling.”
