Big Bear organizations need $10M to save beloved eagles, Jackie and Shadow’s home

BIG BEAR, Calif. (KESQ) - Friends of Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust are calling on the community to help save the land that’s home to beloved bald eagles, Jackie and Shadow. Since 2001, the community has fought a potential luxury development project. Environmentalists say the project would be detrimental to the bald eagles and other wildlife.

"If Moon Camp loses the key trees, if you replace it with homes and cars and a marina, the eagles are going to leave," says Peter Jorris, executive director of the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust.

The project has gone through phases of approval and being halted in court multiple times from 2001 till now. The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust and the developer have entered into a limited agreement to purchase Moon Camp for $10 million to conserve the 63 acres. Locals say they'll do anything to help Jackie and Shadow.

"They're part of us. They're residents of Big Bear. You know, we want to take care of them," says Rob McCoy, owner of Moonridge Coffee Company. He gives out stickers of Jackie and Shadow to customers.

"We love Jackie and Shadow," he says.

Friends of Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust are calling on the community to help with donations as they only have until July 31 to raise the funds. To learn more about donating, visit savemooncamp.org.
