Road closures due to fatal collision involving a pedestrian
One person is dead after crossing the street in Desert Hot Springs. We first brought this story to you as it was breaking on News Channel 3 live at 8 a.m.
The incident happened at 4:40 Saturday morning. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Palm drive near Desert Dunes golf course.
Both north and southbound lanes of Palm drive from 20th to Dillion have been closed for several hours. Expect delays if you are in the area. Police encourage everyone to use alternate routes when traveling in and out of the city.
We spoke with a nearby liquor store clerk who tells us this same thing happened two weeks ago on the same stretch of road.
"I came in at 6 a.m. and the street was already barricaded and it reminded me two weeks ago the same thing happened and come to find out a pedestrian was run over and killed in that dark section down there by Desert Dunes Country Club, he said.
"It's sad. Really street lighting would help, would probably elevate the problem. The speed limit is 55 but everyone goes pretty fast down that road," he added.
We don't have many details confirmed at this time. We do know that the driver of the vehicle cooperated with the police.
Desert Hot Springs police have not confirmed the name of the victim or if speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in this case.
Police at the scene said they are investigating why this person was in the street.
