Local restaurateur honors Coachella Valley hero

Mario DelGuidice, of the Coachella Valley’s Mario’s restaurant chain dedicated a jumbo-sized flag and flagpole to fallen Cpl. Hunter Lopez.

The dedication took place today at 9 a.m. outside of the Palm Desert Mario’s Café at 73-155 Hwy. 111.

The 29 Palms Marine Color Guard participated in the ceremony where a dedication plaque was presented to Hunter's family, along with a permanent plaque that will be on display on the patio in front of Mario’s Palm Desert Café.

Hunter's parents say these ceremonies are welcome reminders that the community remembers their son.

Hunter Lopez lost his life while protecting the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021.
