Block party celebrating the end of Black History Month

Today marks the end of Black History Month, with a final block party scheduled outside the Palm Springs Art Museum.

The block party will commemorate Black History and 50 years of Hip Hop.

Hip Hop was shaped by Black Americans for decades, and is now one of the most popular genres in the United States.

"It’s a combination of not just struggle but elevating yourself, pushing yourself forward," said Lala Johnson of the Palm Springs Art Museum. "[Hip hop] gives you the momentum to believe in yourself."

The block party will also feature dancing, double dutch, barbecue, and spades.

Throughout Black History Month, the Palm Springs Black History Committee and the Palm Springs Art Museum have hosted events.

They noted that this year's Black History Month was a success, bringing together the Black community from all desert cities.

"It’s nice to have outreach in general, and to reach all parts of the desert," said Johnson.

The block party begins at 5:00 PM and ends at 8:00 PM tonight.
