Firebirds fall 5-4 to Wranglers in overtime
THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) - The Coachella Valley Firebirds lost to the Calgary Wranglers 5-4 in overtime on Sunday at Acrisure Arena.
In the first, the Firebirds wasted no time striking first with a Ty Nelson one-timer only 40 seconds into the game. The Wranglers responded with two unanswered goals by Rory Kerins and Nick Cicek.
To close out the opening period, J.R. Avon scored the equalizer with 36 seconds to go.
In the second, the Firebirds started on the right note once more with a power play goal from Eduard Sale. The Wranglers answered with a power play goal themselves by Martin Frk.
In the final frame, Calgary took the 4-3 lead early by Matvei Gridin.
Nine minutes and 20 seconds, Ben Meyers off the deflection nets the game-tying goal to send the game into overtime.
Like the Firebirds' hot start, the Wranglers wasted no time putting the game to bed. Kerins scored his second goal of the game to hand the Firebirds a 5-4 overtime loss.
Nikke Kokko started in net for CV and saved 28 shots on goal.
Firebirds fall to an 8-5-3 record on the season. Coachella Valley will head back on the road and play the San Diego Gulls on Friday, November 28th. Puck drop will be at 6 PM.
