Nice weather this weekend ahead of big changes leading up to Christmas

THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) – It's been a gorgeous Saturday so far in the desert with partly cloudy skies and temperatures running cooler than originally expected. So far, we haven't moved too far past the low 70s, making for picture-perfect conditions in the Palm Springs area.

Temperatures remain pleasant for tomorrow's Winter Solstice. Expect highs in the upper 70s, though if we warm more than we did today, the low 80s aren't out of the question, either.

While nice this weekend, we're in for some wetter weather ahead of Christmas. We're continuing to track rainfall potential moving in as early as Tuesday night, though current FutureTrack models positions that activity to our west until early Christmas Eve.

More significant rainfall is expected Wednesday and Thursday (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). Right now, rainfall totals are in the ballpark of 0.50" to 1.50" for the Coachella Valley from late Tuesday through Thursday. Smaller chances persist Friday and Saturday, too. With this extended period of rain, we could be dealing with travel concerns throughout Southern California. We'll keep you updated as our models become more refined – check back for those updates.

Temperatures are expected to stay a touch warmer than usual through the weekend. Cooler temperatures arrive by Tuesday. Santa appears to be bringing more "wintry" weather this week as we pass the Winter Solstice on Sunday!
