Two additional human cases of West Nile in the Coachella Valley

The Riverside County Department of Public Health confirmed two human cases of the West Nile virus in Coachella and Thermal, marking four human cases in the Coachella Valley this year. The first two cases were in La Quinta and in Desert Hot Springs.

The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District are setting additional traps, increasing larval surveillance to identify mosquito breeding sources, and carrying out larval and adult control.

“Mosquito virus activity is dropping as temperatures cool down in the Valley,” says Jill Oviatt, the District Public Information Manager, “but residents should continue to be vigilant and protect themselves from mosquito bites by covering exposed skin and applying repellent containing EPA-registered ingredients when mosquitoes are active.

Residents can reduce mosquitoes by draining standing water, installing or repair screens, and applying insect repellent.

On Wednesday, the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District detected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in a Mecca neighborhood.
