Palm Springs barricaded suspect charged with making criminal threats

A probationer who barricaded himself inside a Palm Springs home for six hours after allegedly threatening to kill one of his roommates was charged Tuesday with making criminal threats and resisting arrest.

Larry Hayslett, 32, was taken into custody about 10:30 p.m. Thursday after holing up for hours inside a home in the 900 block of Avenida Evelita.

Hayslett, who’s being held on $20,000 bail, also faces an allegation of using a weapon during the standoff.

According to Palm Springs Sgt. William Hutchinson, Hayslett’s roommate called police and said Hayslett had threatened to kill him, possibly with a knife or ax.

The roommate was safely evacuated from the home, but Hayslett refused to leave. When an officer approached the home, Hutchinson said Hayslett armed himself with a knife and locked the door.

Negotiations to get Hayslett out of the home were unsuccessful, the sergeant said, leading a SWAT team to fire a gas canister into the home to flush him out of the residence, where he was subdued by a police dog before being taken into custody.

Hayslett, who pleaded not guilty to all charges this afternoon at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, is also accused of violating the terms of his probation stemming from his guilty plea last year in a misdemeanor domestic violence case.

He will return to court Oct. 25 for a felony settlement conference.
