Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Blythe to close by March 2025
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced today that it is beginning the process of closing the Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Blythe by March 2025.
According to CDCR, the agency will work to offer transfer opportunities for staffers at the facility.
CDCR officials said the agency is also ending use of a lease facility in Kern County and will ``deactivate'' some facilities at six other prisons in a cost-cutting effort.
Facilities at six prisons will be deactivated -- Folsom Women's Facility, Facility C in Pelican Bay State Prison, West Facility in California Men's Colony, Facility A in California Rehabilitation Center, Facility D in California Institution for Men, and Facility D in California Correctional Institution.
In March 2024, a lease contract with CoreCivic for the California City Correctional Facility will be terminated, which will end the facility's use as a state prison, according to CDCR officials.
"Incarcerated people at these locations will be rehoused into appropriate level prisons," CDCR officials said.
