Overnight concrete slab replacement work to begin on I-10 through Coachella and Indio

The California Department of Transportation has announced the start of work on a $4.8 million concrete slab replacement project along Interstate 10 in the eastern Coachella Valley.

The repair work will begin Monday night in and around the cities of Indio and Coachella, according to a Caltrans statement.

The overnight work will narrow late-night and early-morning freeway traffic down to just one travel lane beginning October 24.

Expected travel delays will be similar to a project Coachella Valley residents experienced in the Banning Beaumont area with overnight concrete slab replacements. That work regularly created major traffic jams for several miles through the Banning Pass as overnight freeway traffic was narrowed down to one or two freeway lanes.

Caltrans said crews will place signage in and around the construction zone along Interstate 10 from just west of the Jefferson Street Interchange to two miles east of the Dillon Road overcrossing.

Speeds will be reduced through the construction zone, Caltrans says is expected to be
completed by late winter 2024.

Construction will begin following the signage installation and will be conducted weather permitting Monday through Friday from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
