WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has offered his conservative government’s resignation. The step was required as Poland’s newly elected parliament met for the first time Monday. The chamber voted to chose a Morawiecki opponent as its speaker. An alliance of pro-European Union parties vowing to restore democratic standards won a parliamentary majority in the Oct. 15 election but will have to wait to take power. Their candidate for prime minister is Donald Tusk, the centrist and pro-EU former prime minister. But Poland’s conservative president is giving Morawiecki’s right-wing party the first chance to form a government.
