What is carbon capture and how much of a solution is it after COP28?

An agreement at the United Nations-led climate conference to transition away from fossil fuels brought a measure of relief for climate activists, even as many said it doesn’t go far enough. They also saw something to like in what the agreement said about carbon capture. That’s technology aimed at capturing carbon dioxide before it reaches the atmosphere, or removing carbon dioxide that’s already there. Skeptics have said that its potential has been oversold so that the fossil fuel industry can keep burning lots of oil, gas and coal. They were cheered that the agreement out of Dubai appears to see only a limited role for the technology. The International Energy Agency says the history of carbon capture has been one of unmet expectations.
