Iowa State athletes charged with sports wagering argue evidence was gathered illegally

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Attorneys for four former Cyclone football and wrestling student-athletes charged in the sports betting investigation involving Iowa and Iowa State’s athletics programs say evidence they believe was unlawfully collected shouldn’t be used in court.

A motion to suppress was filed Tuesday by lawyers representing Eyioma Uwazurike, Isaiah Lee, Paniro Johnson and Jirehl Brock, alleging that the athletes cooperated with officials under a false promise of leniency. The attorneys had previously argued that an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent unlawfully collected geofencing data, but the Iowa Department of Public Safety says it believes the evidence was obtained in a “constitutionally permissible manner.”

A judge will hear the motion on Thursday.

More than 25 people associated with the two programs have been charged. Many have pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
