Local football player airlifted after injury during game, released from hospital Saturday

A medical helicopter landed in the middle of a field after a player sustained a serious injury during the game between Coachella Valley and Xavier Prep game on Friday night.

Details remain limited. The player, a student at Xavier Prep, was injured during the second play of the game. The game was temporarily delayed as the helicopter landed on the field.

CAL FIRE confirmed one juvenile patient was airlifted to the local hospital.

Witnesses report he appeared to be suffering from concussion-like symptoms.

The game ended with 6:47 left in the fourth quarter after another Xavier Prep player was down on the field following a helmet-to-helmet collision. The player was taken away on a stretcher.

On Saturday, Xavier Prep school president Mark Campbell confirmed both players were released from the hospital. They are expected to make a full recovery.
