With several races across the Coachella Valley yet to be called and in some instances less than 1000 or hundreds of votes apart, we're taking a look at the ballot curing process.

"You see what had happened was…"

This is in part an explanation from Anna Chapman, a Riverside County voter, who will soon be curing her ballot.

"As i was filling out my ballot, outside the ballot you have to sign it," Chapman said. "And right when I went to sign it, my pen ran out of week half-way through."

take a look at this.

She received an email on Monday informing her, her ballot had been rejected but, also with information on how to rectify the issue.

"I did feel slightly ripped off at first. I thought oh no my voice isn't being heard."

Chapman's needed correcting and fortunately in the godlen state voters are provided a way to remedy this ill.

"California is one of the states that does this. Not all do, and what it is, is verifying the ballot."

"For example, someone's signature does not quite match the signature that is on file with the voter registration," Kurpiewski explained. "So the register of voters will contact that person and say, can you come in, or can we, can we get your verification?"

Several races are neck and neck.

Campaigns are urging voters to volunteer as vote curers to make sure every vote counts.

"It is very important. it the 2025 general Christy Holstege lost the general by 85 votes."

Barbara Riker is a volunteer vote curer in Rancho Mirage. She said volunteers go through training. and then are given a list of voters contact in-person, over the phone, or email.

"Almost every case this time, and i've knocked on a lot of doors this cycle," Riker said. "The voter knows they've been contacted. they've talked to the registrar of voters."

And regardless of party, the "doctors" of democracy treat every patient the same.

"So it's not like you guys are saying "oh here's a Calvert ballot" and "swoosh" tossing it away?"

"No, i do not ask, who the who the person voted for," Riker explains. "I just say, did you receive the information that your ballot had been rejected? And here's the way to get it cured, and i can help facilitate that for you."

In California, voters are required to be notified by phone, email, or text message, if included in their voting record.

And like chapman, are given until two days before the election is actually certified to correct any defects.
