Health officials urge precautions ahead of Palm Springs Pride amid rising Mpox and flu cases
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) - With Palm Springs Pride Weekend just days away, local health officials are stepping up efforts to keep celebrations both joyful and safe. As tens of thousands are expected to attend parades, parties, and community events, Riverside County health leaders are increasing outreach, education, and vaccination availability to prevent the spread of illness.
Officials say the timing of Pride coincides with a recent uptick in reported mpox cases — 24 confirmed so far this year in Riverside County — and the arrival of flu season, making prevention efforts more urgent.
“Especially in these settings, we have larger groups of people gathering. The respiratory viruses can spread a lot easier.”
Dr. Endre Agoston, Kaiser Permanente Physician
The county’s public health department has already issued clinician advisories and expanded community education in the lead-up to Pride. Vaccinations for mpox, flu, and COVID-19 are being offered at county clinics and through partner organizations.
Many Pride-goers are taking those warnings seriously. However, some in the LGBTQ+ community say there’s still not enough awareness, and stigma surrounding certain health issues remains a challenge.
Local health providers say they’re actively working to change that.
“Our officers are very open to support all of our members. We actually have specific teams that are providing care for the LGBT-focused care.”
Dr. Endre Agoston, Kaiser Permanente Physician
“The message is landing, we’re working with our community partners and local community based organizations to amplify prevention efforts and spreading tips about vaccine availability.”
Andrea Gallegos, Riverside University Health System HIV/STD Branch Chief
Both Riverside University Health System and Kaiser Permanente will have booths at this weekend’s Palm Springs Pride Festival, offering free vaccines, health information, and resources to attendees.
