Student Athlete of the Week – Jonah Toland
PALM DESERT, Calif. (KESQ) -- Palm Desert senior wide receiver and defensive back Jonah Toland is this week's student athlete of the week.
Jonah Tolan has been a human highlight reel all season long for the Palm Desert Aztecs, but his journey to become the player he is today began in his freshman year.
"We knew when he walked in as a freshman that he was going to be something special," Aztecs head coach Rudy Forti said. "The last two years, he's done nothing but grown and matured and worked. I mean, he's gotten so much stronger in the weight room. He's so much faster. I mean, you just knew the potential was there, and now it's coming to fruition."
Toland is one of one. Every time he steps on the field, he makes explosive plays, and creating highlights on Friday nights comes naturally to him.
"When I'm on the field, I really don't think," senior Toland said. "I just feel like how hard I worked in the offseason. I feel like it just comes in and has me ready for any and anybody that tries to face me."
Toland's journey goes beyond the gridiron. With his dad coaching on the Palm Desert staff, Jonah plays not only to win but also for his family.
"It's bigger than just football," senior Toland said. "I really play for my family to strive. I want to go to the next level in college. Hopefully, my dreams and aspirations will come true, and I will play in the NFL. I feel like I will get there if I keep working hard."
Toland wears the number one to show that he is one of the best in the valley, not only as an athlete but also as a leader, both on and off the field.
"He practices it like it's going to be the last practice of the year," head coach Forti said. "He works hard in the classroom. He works hard in the weight room. He's just a role model. You know, he's a leader, and it's someone that all the kids can look up to."
We are always looking for Student-Athlete of the Week nominations. If you know a senior who should be featured next, be sure to contact the KESQ sports department.
